At meetings of the Literature club book lovers, led by American expatriate Ms. Dianne McNary, have opportunity to familiarize themselves more closely with American and world literature. The aim of the meetings is to create space for personal dialogue and the search for cultural empathy. The first lady of the United States Ms. Laura Bush, during an opening of InfoUSA Bratislava in her speech said, that even today, in this age of technological advancement, reading remains a unique way for discovering our history, culture and collective memory which is so important for our humanity. "With reading comes greater understanding and self-respect, and greater respect for others. And an understanding of other cultures is essential for our future and for future generations". Our center has decided to pick up this appeal and through the Literature club bring works of American and non-American authors closer to our patrons. American literary art comprises works written from around the year 1600 onwards. These works try to reflect America’s effort to gain understanding and find its own identity. Thanks to the multitude of background of its population, America has been a unique place since the time of its establishment. Alongside the most commonly-featuring English language, American literature has been enlivened and enhanced from its very beginning by the use of other languages and regional dialects. Present-day American literature contains a variety of currents which have established a firm presence in world literary art, and have begun to influence other national literatures as well. f you too would like to join in this discovering of history and literary secrets of life, as well as practicing your English, you are all most welcome at the InfoUSA center Kosice. The Literary club is meeting every other Tuesday at 16:30. We are looking forward to you all! |
