Dear Sir, Madam,
The Slovak Debate Association in cooperation with the British Council is proud to invite you to a seminar on the implementation of academic debate into the foreign language curriculum. The seminar is going to take place on 4th February 2010 from 9:00 to 18:00 clocks in the British Centre Košice, located in the 1 floor, State Scientific Library at 10 Hlavná st.
The workshop is going to introduce academic debate as one of the new methods of teaching English in schools. Academic debate is a very progressive and modern educative tool and gives students the opportunity to improve their communication skills in an interactive and enjoyable way. Debating is especially helpful in foreign language education. It gives every student an opportunity to read and speak about various up-to-date topics and take clear stances toward the discussed matter; therefore it forces each participant to use all his knowledge of the topic and express it in a foreign language. The result is that the student begins to think in the foreign language.
Moreover, when students become more interested and involved in academic debates, they have the possibility to participate in many debate tournaments worldwide, all held in English not only due to the fact that English-speaking countries have the longest history in competitive debating. Students will gain the chance to speak publicly and compete with other debaters from all around the world.
This event will be held Slovak language and even if the main aim is toward foreign language teachers, we believe that the methods we will present are usable in any subject.
Various ways of reaching more interactive foreign language education through debate will be introduced by members of the National Trainers’ Team of the Slovak Debate Association.
